The department shares the commitment of the College of Liberal Arts to
provide students with a broad liberal arts education and helps to prepare
them for socially responsible careers in journalism, public relations, and radio/television.

To this end the department offers a program of study that
affords students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds the
opportunity to learn the skills, acquire the knowledge and encourage the
understanding required for professional careers in the fields of mass
communication. The department shares the university's commitment to recruit
and retain students and provides a friendly atmosphere with regular advising
periods for all its majors in each semester.


The department provides the production equipment needed for the study of
mass communication using journalism, radio/television and public relations
technologies
and participates in university efforts to keep this equipment
up to date.

The Mission Statement leads to the following set of objectives:

1. Present programs and courses that represent diverse cultures, backgrounds
and viewpoints, and foster an environment that welcomes such diversity.

2. Inculcate students with a sound foundation in communication skills using
a variety of technologies used by today's mass communication media.

3. Advise students on a regular basis and monitor student retention, taking
action as needed to improve retention and recruitment consistent with
departmental and university policies and resources.

4. Encourage the use of private funding to support value added initiatives
in technological exploration, faculty travel, and research or creative
activities for faculty, staff and students.
